Shades in the VITA classical guide are grouped as follows:
A1 - A4 (reddish-brownish)
B1 - B4 (reddish-yellowish)
C1 - C4 (greyish)
D2 - D4 (reddish-grey)
Shade selection advice:
• Where possible, tooth shades should be selected in daylight or with daylight normalised lights, and not with the usual surgery light.
• Surroundings should be as colour neutral as possible. Ask patients to remove lipstick or other make-up. Brightly-coloured clothing should be covered with a grey cloth.
• Selection should be rapid, always accept the first choice as your eyes will fatigue after about 5–7 seconds.
Procedure:
• Place the shade guide at an appropriate distance (arm’s length) next to the patient’s mouth.
• Choose the shade quickly, comparing the sample shades in groups A–D against the natural tooth.
Disinfect the shade guide after selection with each patient. If you prefer to arrange the shades according to their brightness instead of their colours, then we suggest you place the shade samples in the following order: B1, A1, B2, D2, A2, C1, C2, D4, A3, D3, B3, A3.5, B4, C3, A4, C4
